Purpose of the awards
A supplement’s formulation, scientific support, quality records, and labeling need to be considered together. The awards bring these materials into one assessment, using requirements that applicants can read before submitting.
Products are assessed against the criteria individually. There is no ranking between applicants and no fixed number of awards.
What the award covers
An award applies to the formulation and label version named in the official record. That record identifies the responsible company, product category, criteria version, award dates, and any limits relevant to the decision.
The award remains specific to that product. Changes to active ingredients, dose, strain, or intended users may require a new application.
Basis of assessment
ASA reviews submitted documents, including scientific publications and relevant existing analytical reports. The program does not collect samples, perform laboratory testing, or audit manufacturing facilities.
An award confirms that the submitted evidence met the applicable criteria. It is not regulatory approval, product certification, or a guarantee of safety or effectiveness. Companies remain responsible for their products and claims.
Administration and oversight
The Awards Secretariat handles applications and correspondence. Scientific and technical reviewers assess the evidence; a separate reviewer checks the final decision. Appeals require a reviewer who did not make the original decision.
These responsibilities, conflict requirements, and decision procedures are set out in the program rules.
Participation and fees
ASA membership is not required. Application and review are free, as are the digital certificate, registry listing, and approved artwork issued with an award.
Trophies, printed certificates, and labels are separate, optional purchases. Purchasing decisions are excluded from award assessment.
